The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E will feature a hands-free tailgate that can be opened by simply waving your foot under the bumper. The idea is to provide convenience and safety as you exit your vehicle.
As you step out of the driver’s seat, the tailgate automatically opens. Once out of the car, you need to place your foot under the bumper to get it to close. You do not have to touch anything else in the car; it closes behind you automatically when it senses that you are ready to leave your car.
The system uses a camera mounted in the trunk and a motion sensor in the rear bumper. When the vehicle is unlocked, it detects someone walking up to the car and automatically opens the tailgate. Once opened, it can be closed with a simple wave of your hand or foot, according to Ford. If your hands are full, you can also use voice commands or an app on your phone to close it.
The company believes that this system will save owners time when getting in and out of their cars, but even so, it seems like an unnecessary feature at this stage in development.
