From damaging the exhaust system to causing rust, winter can be brutal on your car.
For this reason, taking the right steps to prepare your vehicle for the winter is crucial: not only can it reduce the maintenance and repairs requirements, but it can also significantly increase the car’s useful life.
The most important thing is to start making early preparations. While many people decide to start preparing for the inclemency of winter in and around December, we recommend doing it during early fall. This way, you allow yourself enough time to cover all bases and not cut things too close.
You must also keep a closer eye on your car’s fluid levels. Wiper fluid, for example, will obviously get used up quickly if you are frequently driving your car during snowstorms. Keeping a full gas tank also becomes more important during winters. Full tanks prevent accumulated water in the fuel pump from freezing up. Also, by allowing you to keep running the engine, a full gas tank can help you keep warm in case you are stranded.
The cold weather makes the car oil less effective: it turns the oil thicker and consequently reduces engine circulation. To avoid this, you may consider purchasing thinner-than-normal oil during the course of the winter. To check your winter oil thickness (viscosity) – along with the ideal viscosity for each season – refer to your vehicle’s owner manual.
